Tai Chi for Better Health Physical Activity for Healthy Seniors
This 11 week Tai Chi program is specifically designed for people who have Diabetes, heart disease or experience anxiety. The sessions consist of a set of gentle movements designed to improve and optimise your general health.

Booking is required before attending program.

Pole Walking Physical Activity for Healthy Seniors
Pole Walking is a walking program using specially designed Nordic poles to gain extra health benefits. This ongoing program has two weekly groups led by trained volunteers.

Walks depart from the Sunbury Community Health Centre each 1st and 3rd Wednesday & Friday of the month (except the 2nd & 4th Wed of the month, which depart from Sunbury Private Hospital, Spavin Drive).

Each session takes about 1 hour.

Bookings and attendance at a 'Come & Try' introductory session are essential before joining a group.

Poles may be purchased or hired for $2 per casual walk after the initial program. No charge if using your own poles.

It provides the opportunity for participants to practise, refresh and polish their Tai Chi moves.

Walking Groups Physical Activity for Healthy Seniors
Come join our short and long walks ranging from 40 to 75 minutes.

Groups are led by volunteers who have undertaken the Victoria Health Group Leader Training program and are supported by our Physiotherapy Department. This group is affiliated with Heart Foundation Walking

Stay Fit Live Well Physical Activity for Healthy Seniors
Stay Fit Live Well is a comprehensive program for adults who are keen to increase their activity levels, manage weight and take control of health issues such as Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions and arthritis. Regular exercise can assist in combating muscle loss due to aging.

You can choose to do just one or a combination of exercise classes, strength training and walking groups.

Endorsed by the Council on the Aging, strength training sessions consist of progressive resistance training aimed at improving muscle strength. Physiotherapists coordinate and supervise the exercise and strength classes.

Walking Groups are affiliated with Heart Foundation Walking and led by trained leaders. They depart from a variety of Sunbury locations.

Assessment by a Doctor is required prior to start. Bookings Essential.

Hydrotherapy or aquatic physiotherapy is treatment conducted in a heated pool under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Exercises and treatment techniques specifically designed for the aquatic environment are used to help individuals regain or enhance their physical wellbeing.

Sessions are conducted on Fridays at the Sunbury Aquatic & Leisure Centre (SALC) in Ligar Street, Sunbury

Youth One Stop Body Shop Family Support
Sunbury Community Health Centre in conjunction with Sunbury Secondary College & Sunbury Downs Secondary College will conduct a one (1) day health check workshop for year 9 secondary school students.

The program will be conducted at the Sunbury Community Health Centre during school hours over three days.

It will consist of a range of health checks suitable for young people. The aim of this day is to introduce young people to the concept of looking after their own health. 2010 will be our 9th year of conducting the Body Shop.

Sunbury Pram Walkers Family Support
Come join our weekly walking group for parents with very young children.

Improve your fitness after the birth of your baby. Enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of exercise. Enjoy the fresh air and the sights and sounds of nature; a benefit to both you and your baby. Meet and socialise with other parents.

All walking paths are pram friendly with opportunities to stop if babies need to be changed or fed.

Groups are run by a qualified Physiotherapist specialised in Children and Women's Health.

Target Word Family Support
Target Word is a family focussed program for parents of children aged 18 - 30 months who are late talkers.

A late talker is a child who has appropriate play and listening skills but has:
* less than 10 spoken words between 18 - 20 months
* less than 25 spoken words between 21 - 24 months
* less than 50 words and/or no 2 word combinations
between 24 - 30 months

This program teaches parents how to help children use their words and build their vocabulary during everyday activities.

Target Word is led by a Hansen Certified Speech Pathologist.

A speech pathology assessment is required before children can be considered for this program.

Postnatal Depression Support for Women Family Support
P.N.D. is the most common disorder affecting women after giving birth. Even months after giving birth, or from one pregnancy to another, women can experience P.N.D. Depression during pregnancy is also common.

A group of women meet regularly in an informal setting to share experiences, feelings and strategies for managing stress and depression. Individual counselling is available for women & their partners. The group is also available to pregnant women & women whose youngest child is under 2 yrs. The 2009 program is co-facilitated with the Caroline Chisolm Society.

This program runs during school terms only. There are no sessions during school holiday times.

New Horizons Family Support
This social recreation group aims to provide an opportunity for people who live at home and are unable to access mainstream social activities to develop self confidence, social skills and make new friendships.

Respite for families is of primary consideration and transport may be arranged.

This special interest group, for people who have a Neuromuscular condition such as Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis or Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, meets monthly.

Participants can gain support, share ideas with other people on an informal basis & hear from guest speakers.

A bi-monthly newsletter is available featuring upcoming events, social lunches and group news is available.

An Occupational Therapist coordinates the group.

Kids Life - MEND Program General Programs
Kids Life in Sunbury helps children get fitter, healthier and happier. This program is designed to support and resource families to make healthy lifestyle changes, targeting families of primary school aged children who are overweight. This offers a group based lifestyle program or an individual service is also available.

Kids Life - MEND Program (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition.. Do It!) offers free healthy lifestyle course for overwieght kids aged 7 to 13yrs and their families. They take part in fun 2-hour sessions, twice a week for 10 weeks.

The Kids Life Program helps children and thier families improve in their eating and exercise habits, thereby improving children's fitness, physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem. The group based lifestyle program will run in conjunction within VIC school terms.

We are a diverse group of volunteers who meet weekly to contribute skills in Woodworking to the Health Centre, the greater community and ourselves. The shed is a casual, social atmosphere for making toys and furniture.

Programmed Activity Groups Older Persons
Four programmed activity groups are held at the Sunbury Community Health Centre. These are aimed at providing purposeful activities for people who are frail aged, have chronic illness, disability or dementia and who have limited access to social opportunities in the community.

Referral and assessment are required.

Transport may be arranged.

Falls and Mobility Assessment Program Older Persons
Our monthly screening clinic is held on the 4th Wednesday of each month for people who are having falls or who are at risk of falling.

Assessment will include Gait & Balance, Falls Risk Assessment, Home Assessment for potential hazards, Medication check and footwear education.

The Lunchbreak Program Older Persons
A program of optional varied social outings over a few hours each Thursday, always including lunch. This program is for independant seniors who do not have much opportunity to socialise, with priority given to those who have carers.

Each week clients are accompanied by a trained support worker on an outing such as a visit to a club, musical event or country drive. Costs vary according to the outing.

An initial assessment is required by an Occupational Therapist.

In The Balance Older Persons
A exercise class for people who have been assessed as having poor balance. This program starts in February and runs throughout the year.

Referral and assessment required. Transport may be arranged.

This program is offered twice a day on Mondays at 10:30 - 11:30am and 1:30 - 2:30pm.
